What you need to know about Coonhounds

Coonhounds are one of the most popular breeds of dog that come in all shapes and sizes. 
If you are thinking of adopting one of our fascinating animals, there are few things you should know. 

Temperament

Smart, easy-going, tenacious, devoted, bright, brave, & good with children.
Hounds can keep pace with the most active family, yet they can also hog the sofa for hours on end.
They may not be the best dogs for an apartment setting since they do require a balanced amount of exercise.

While their floppy-eared charm is irresistible, a passing squirrel can arouse their prey drive in no time flat. Thus, a strong leash is recommended when walking your hound.
They crave affection and are deeply devoted to those who provide it, however, they can sometimes be too much hound for everyone’s lifestyle.

Size/Body Type

Height: Males range 22-27 inches
      Females range 21-25 inches
Weight: Males range 55-110 pounds
    Females range 45-65 pounds

The baying and choppy bark of Blueticks may be thunderous to some, yet to coon hunters it’s music to their ears.

Age

Life Expectancy: ranges from 10-13 years

 

Health

They are generally a very healthy and sturdy breed. However, there are a few things to be mindful of:
       1) Hip dysplasia, which affects most large dog breeds in older years.
       2) Autoimmune thyroiditis can affect them in there older years.

     3) Dogs with floppy ears can be prone to ear infections, thus, a weekly check and cleansing, if necessary, is recommended. Its important to keep ears dry to inhabit any yeast or bacteria growth.

       4) Bloat is worth mentioning, as it can affect some breeds of dog.


Grooming

Minimal grooming is required for this breed
 

Training

As with most dogs early  obedience training and socialization is recommended.
They are deeply devoted, lovable and playful companions. They are eager to have a purpose so mental stimulation is vital to avoid boredom.

In most cases they are friendly with cats, yet do best if they grow up with them.

Often times hounds are independent, strong-willed, and fiercely loyal companions.
Coonhounds are amazing dogs! As with most dogs or breeds, they require work, time, and dedication. However, if you adopt one of our pups & put forth the effort and give them the care required, trust me you wont regret it!  You will have a loyal & loving friend for years to come!
